The Village
Bars
Dick's Bar
192 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10003
Tel: 212-475-2071
Dick's is a refreshingly run-down and quaintly sleazy cheap-drinkin'
place where one can spot the rare moustachioed leather daddy, who is
most likely old enough actually to be your daddy. The sweaty debauchery
that must have taken place here in the good old days you can only imagine.
Good things: a jukebox that only a true '80s music fan would know, replete
with classics like Gary Numan and Ultravox; dollar Old Milwaukees; and
porn on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bad things: showtune flicks on Mondays
and the Dick shot -- creme de banana, butterscotch schnapps and Bailey's
-- a Slimfast shake gone terribly wrong. It is also one of the only
bars in the East Village where you can find an available bar stool on
a Friday night at midnight.

Western Levi bar. Older crowd. The bar is an institution. Walk by
the front windows and be ogled night and day! Rustic inside. Small
and cruisy. Overly friendly crowd.
Julius'

Happy Hour Mon-Fri 4pm-9pm
Julius 159 W 10th St. New York City, NY 212.929.9672 Open 8PM-4AM
Mon to This low-key landmark bar has a devoted longtime clientele
of mature men, and some younger men who are looking to see if any
of those "mature men" may be interested in a "younger man" for the
evening! This bar has something, though, that distinguishes it from
the competition-a grill, from which come some of the best burgers
you are likely to taste anywhere! The bar is intimate and relaxed,
and everyone seems to know everyone. If you order one of their delicious
burgers, you can eat it while looking at the outside sights from a
nearby window (or looking at the inside sites, which can be just as
interesting)! There is a pool table and juke box, and the interior
of Julius' reminds you of a comfortable den in a lodge, with the same
wood tones and warm feeling

Probably the most popular bar in Greenwich Village. Right on Sheridan
Square across from the infamous Stonewall. Happy piano bar on ground
level draws older crowd, downstairs dance floor draws younger guys.
There is a cover charge on weekends.
Rose's Turn Inc
55 Grove St
New York, NY 10014
Rose's Turn is a loud, raucous, smoky piano bar that features
a terrific singing staff, alternating pianists and an open mike policy
every night of the week. On weekends Rose's becomes the Village's
only "rock-n-roll piano bar" with Bill Graves playing everything
from show tunes to jazz standards as well as hits from the 60's, 70's
and today! Broadway veteran Terri White keeps the place hopping with
tunes like Mustang Sally and Proud Mary. Bartenders Michael Dionne
and Michael Barbieri put on their own show behind the bar, by singing
back-up harmonies and with their synchronized tambourine choreography.
Waitress Kimlee Hicks knocks people out with her renditions of Janis
Joplin classics and humorous Broadway show tunes. Upstairs is a comedy
club where (mainly) drag artists torment entertain their straight
victims audience.

Where Chelsea style meets East Village grunge. An ingenious, two-tiered
bar--high on one side, low on the other, with untold cruising sightlines--dominates
this thoroughly transformed space, whose mirrors and plasma screens
help open up its railroad layout. Ultrasuede banquettes and creamy
pillows and a conversation-friendly DJ also make it easy to spend
time here.

Cleo's 9th Avenue Saloon

NY 10036;
Tel: (212) 307-1503
This friendly little bar is an island of normality amid a sea of midtown
sleaze -- well, as normal as gays can be.
Report 02/03 "It is very mature friendly and reminds me of what
Boots and Saddles was like 10 years ago."

The Townhouse
236 East 58th Street (between 2nd & 3rd Ave.)
Tel: 754 4694
Elegant bar on two levels. Piano bar upstairs. Smart crowd.
When I was there the crowd seemed to be mostly from their 20s to
about 60
The Townhouse is definitely the "dress to impress" locale in New
York. Lots of beautifully cut suits and tasteful neckwear. The downside
of this is that the atmosphere tends to be competitive, rather than
friendly. There are a LOT of guys cruising, or maybe just posing.
A friend tells me that there are quite a few high-priced hustlers
(the old crowd from "Rounds") there. They have a discreet sign at
the entrance requesting that solicitations for money be reported
to the management. The fact that they NEED the sign says something. Best
before 1am if you want to meet a nice guy.

Report: Feb 2002
"Wish you could, for the sake of naive older gents that might
read the guide, include a little heads up on the Townhouse in Manhattan.
Unlike the wonderful ex bar called Regent East that was on the same
street, where the management did not allow hustlers in, the Townhouse
doesn't mind the many hustlers the frequent the place. It's a shame
to watch these foolish unattractive older men who honestly think
they are driving these hot looking younger guys mad, only to get
home with them and find out the price. I've had many a conversation
with older guys that have been propositioned there. Just this evening
as I walked home, I passed the Townhouse, where a hustler was harassing
a john on the street, another guy happened to walk by at the same
time and was knocked to the ground we he tried to intervene. So
perhaps you could add this info as an update and maybe the management
finally will address this situation."

Comments "The East Side Club is on 3 levels connected by stairs. The
club consists of many rooms in 3 different sizes and lockers. Temporary
membership is required
along with payment for the "changing" rooms or lockers. ID is required.
When
we were there at midnight on Saturday we had to wait in line to get
in and there were only lockers available. The club is located in a
commercial building in midtown which is very discreet. Since the club
was fairly crowded there was a lot of activity in the halls, in a
video room as well as in the changing rooms. We had a great time and
plan to return."
Report 07/2001: "The club is more
frequented by guys in their 30's-40's. In the afternoons sometimes
you might see 50% older men,but in the evening the crowd gets younger
as it gets later. I recommend being there any time between 1-9pm to
increase your chances of finding a nice older man."

Despite a healthy gay population on the Upper West Side, there are
surprisingly few locations in the area catering to gay men. Candle
Bar is one of the rare ones, a cozy spot dominated by a crowd of
local, older guys. It offers pool, a generous happy hour from 2p
to 9p from Monday to Friday, and daily drink specials. Service is
friendly and professional. In other words, it fits right into the
neighborhood. Cash only. (Candle Bar is also one of the original
pre-Stonewall bars - see History

Fire
Island
The nearest gay resort to NY is Fire
Island near Long Island, which is reachable by ferry approx. 1hour
from Sayville, Long Island. Fire Island is very much a low-key gay
resort, there are few hotels and nightlife is mainly private parties.
There are two distinct communities
on Fire Island - The Pines which tends to cater for the young, bronzed
and muscle-toned male and Cherry Grove which caters for everyone else
(including many lesbians) and particularly the more mature crowd.
The Pines has the more lively bars and Cherry Grove has the better
restaurants.
The two communities are divided by
an undeveloped stretch of dunes and pines nicknamed "The Meat Rack"
which is an active cruise area day and night.
Accommodations are in short supply
(200 beds total for both communities so book early) or rent a house
or find a friend who owns one! All accommodations and restaurants
are very expensive in season.
